Hegarty Demolition were contracted as the specialist demolition contractor to carry out the demolition of Apollo House in Dublin City Centre. Built in the late 60s, the 10 storey office block consisted of an RC frame with precast panels. Located along both Tara Street and Poolbeg Street, traffic management and pedestrian safety were a major challenge to overcome during the works. A detailed traffic management plan was implemented to minimize the effect of the works on the surrounding traffic while machinery was entering and exiting the site. Scaffolding was also erected to encase the facades of the building on the street to prevent any demolition arisings breaching the site perimeter. This scaffold also helped to mitigate noise and dust pollution.

Following soft strip and asbestos removal, structural demolition commenced by use of high reach machines using cutter-crusher type attachments. These works included the demolition of roof, walls and concrete slabs which comprised of a suspended reinforced concrete carpark ancillary structure.

Due to the location of this site in Dublin City Centre, surrounded by other high rise office blocks, this project presented numerous difficulties from public safety to ensuring no surrounding buildings were damaged during works. However, HDL had the experience and expertise to complete the works in a safe and efficient manner.
